A coastal-inspired space uses the natural environment to inform the design choices within a room. From the colour palette, to the texture choices, to the use of light, everything about a coastal space is designed with the outside world in mind - perfect for creating a laid back space.
Breezy, Natural, Bright
To achieve the modern coastal aesthetic, you don't have to live anywhere near the sea, nor do you have to create an overt beach-house style with nautical stripes or pirate ship decor. Use raw materials to accessorise, and layer up your fabric choices to create a space that doesn't feel overly curated - remember you're aiming for a soft, relaxed design.
Something borrowed, something blue
Of course, a staple of coastal design is a blue colour palette. Try to opt for a shade that feels beachy and soft, as this will compliment the neutral hues that are an essential element of coastal design. Without texture, your space can begin to feel flat and one-dimensional - this is where natural woods and fabrics come in. Whether you add this in the form of upcycled accessories, or vintage wall hangings, pick out something that feels classic and nostalgic.
something old, something new
Our designer, Zoe, opted to put a modern twist on the traditional nautical choice of striped tiles, by laying them in an assorted style. The pairing of this with a white subway tile creates a space that feels light, bright and airy, and compliments the uniformity of the wooden ceiling.
