Designed to meet the demands of busy family life without sacrificing style, Irene’s bathroom renovation transforms a once impractical space into something both functional and refined. Previously lacking a shower, storage, and sufficient basin space, the room struggled to serve two teenage boys day-to-day. The new design answers every challenge with thoughtful precision - introducing dual basins, smart storage, and a luxurious walk-in shower. Inspired by a love of dark, moody interiors, Irene has created a space that feels elevated and atmospheric.

What was the biggest challenge with your old bathroom?

"Our old bathroom was not fit for purposes for two teenage boys. It had a bath and no workable shower and with two growing boys (and any guests who use this bathroom) we really needed a shower. It had one tiny sink, which made it difficult for two boys to share. There was also a problem with storage – there was nowhere to store any toiletries so the room easily felt messy."

What was the brief for the renovation?

"The brief was clear from the start - create a bathroom that could genuinely work hard for two teenage boys sharing the space, without compromising on atmosphere or style. We wanted it to feel moody and luxurious rather than purely functional, with enough sophistication that it would feel just as welcoming and impressive to any guest using it. It needed to strike that balance between everyday practicality and something that felt truly special."

What inspired your design choices?

I always knew I wanted a dark, moody aesthetic - something with real depth and personality. The turning point came when I discovered the ‘Vitoria’ furniture range from Tavistock, in their dark colourway. The moment I saw it, everything clicked into place. I immediately knew I wanted to colour match the walls to the units, creating a seamless, immersive feel throughout the room.

What makes the biggest difference in your new bathroom?

"Without question, it’s the combination of considered lighting, materials, and the Tavistock Vitoria unit all working together. We made the decision to forgo ceiling lighting entirely, relying instead on moody wall lighting that creates a warm, atmospheric glow. Pair that with the marble walls and the two Vitoria units, and the space feels genuinely luxurious - more like a boutique hotel than a family bathroom."

What is your favourite Tavistock product?

"Can I have two products? Am going to go for it. Firstly – the ‘Vitoria’ cloakroom units, without a doubt. They were the anchor of the entire design (as we knew that we wanted two units side by side however the space of the room is not large). Finding this unit and being able to use it in this way inspired everything else. The dark finish is stunning and the quality feels premium in every way. They completely elevate the space."

"The traditional Varsity taps are my favourite. We chose separate hot and cold taps for the basins, without a mixer in the middle - very much the classic English style."
